I believe that even if one individual does no it all, certainly can not do it all, in an organization, I beleive that knowledge should be shared, the workload should be divided among each employee, and if each individual does his or her job, the organization will grow, because it takes everyone workinf together for a common goal.

Hi Nanci: A timely and thought provoking post! For most people it seems such enlightenment comes incrementally vs. a jump. Little overnight bags vs. suitcases. i.e. We finally act on our knowledge that we don't need to commute 45 minutes each way and still get our work done...and then we soon realize that all those meetings are truly as wasteful as they seem. And so on. We come to our larger senses.

Best advice I ever had? A job coach had me write down the three most fulfilling things I enjoy doing at work and at home. I realized at the time I was only doing 2 of the six. Other demands had crept in. I could then track 20 years of professional ups and downs by retracing when these points of fulfillment came and went. It's more than balance. It's identifying what you enjoy and finding the place to make it happen.

Nanci,

Like the blog. Good use of LinkedIN! More corporations should use some form of social network to get the real pulse of the company, not just employee surveys. On the above topic, we can never have enough good leaders. The trick is getting them to stay around for a while.

Great post-this should even be given to college students who don't seem to know too much at all about interviewing. One question: What does "uses your non-verbals to tell the rest of the story" mean/

This is a nice reminder of how easy it is to not think of how actions can affect others/co-workers, etc...as a small business owner myself, i tend to get very caught up in day-to-day responsibilities and it does make it challenging to remember that as a business owner I must remain strong and, 'act as if' my schedule is always open and my nerves are always stable. Nanci, I'd like to learn more about these common mistakes small business owners make...maybe we could have one a week over the next few months? ;-) That would keep me coming back for sure!

Nanci, Do you have any specific advice for interacting / communicating with co-workers whom have been notified that they are losing their jobs due to an organizational change? Many people aren't sure what to say, how to say it, etc. for fear of hurting the person or saying the "wrong" thing and just making the situation worse.
